From Russia with Love is the second James Bond film made by Eon Productions and the second to star Sean Connery as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. Released in 1963, the film was produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, and directed by Terence Young. It is based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Ian Fleming. In the film, James Bond is sent to assist in the defection of Soviet consulate clerk Tatiana Romanova in Turkey, where SPECTRE plans to avenge Bonds killing of Dr. No.

Seeking to exact revenge on James Bond 007 for killing SPECTREs agent, Dr. No, the organisations expert planner, Kronsteen, devises a plan to manipulate him into stealing a Lektor cryptographic device from the Soviets. Spectres leader, Number1, puts Rosa Klebb in charge of the mission, an exSMERSH operative and the organisations Number 3, who recruits Donald Red Grant to protect Bond until he acquires the Lektor, before assassinating him and taking the device so that SPECTRE can sell it back to the Soviets. To further assist the scheme, Klebb recruits Tatiana Romanova, a cipher clerk at the Soviet consulate in Istanbul, as an unwitting pawn in the plan whom she fools into thinking that she is still working for SMERSH. In London, M informs Bond that Romanova has contacted their Station T in Turkey, offering to defect with a Lektor, which both MI6 and the CIA have been after for years. However, Romanovas message states that she will only defect if brought back by Bond, whose photo she had allegedly found in a Soviet intelligence file. Prior to his departure, Bond is supplied with a attach case containing a concealed knife, concealed gold sovereigns, and a special tear gas booby trap connected to the lock mechanism, along with a Armalite AR7 rifle.Travelling to Istanbul, Bond heads into the city to meet with station head Ali Kerim Bey. While travelling into the city, Bond is tailed from the airport by Bulgarians working for the Russians, who are in turn tailed by Grant. Shortly after Bond is taken back to his hotel, Grant kills one of the Bulgarians after stealing their car, before dumping it outside the Soviet consulate in order to provoke them in retaliating against Kerim Bey. However, Kerim Bey luckily avoids an attempt on his life with a limpet mine, and soon assists Bond in spying on the Soviet consulate the following day.
